Pick Me, Pick Me!

NFL Draft  -

Why anybody would spend all day Saturday watching seven rounds of the NFL Draft is as much a mystery as the moai on Rapa Nui. Family, teammates and gold chasing girlfriends of soon-to-be-millionaires notwithstanding, who, other than drunken Jets fans and Mel Kiper’s parents, really tunes in?

If your team has a high first round pick and needs a quarterback, we get it. But seeing coaches and owners whisper in mock “war rooms” about a player’s “total package” holds less interest than watching Elizabeth Hasselbeck espouse on The View…actually, that might be a bit of a stretch.

Numbers

30

The number of teams that BYU offensive tackle Eli Herring wrote letters to in 1995 saying he would not play on Sundays due to his religious beliefs. The Raiders picked him anyway thinking he would change his mind. Herring politely declined the offer. You have to respect the conviction, but the dude could have built his very own tabernacle with all the cheddar he would have made.

Quote

He is going to be a franchise guy.

Former Chargers head coach June Jones in 1998 on Ryan Leaf

Leaf, rivaling Linda Lovelace on his proficiency to blow, played for 3 different teams in 3 years.

Words
Mr. Irrelevant

The annual award given each year to the last player taken in the NFL draft.

Yes folks, jocks even pick on other jocks.

Fact

The first NFL draft was in 1936. Heisman trophy winner and University of Chicago halfback Jay Berwanger was the Philadelphia Eagles’ first pick. After being traded to the Bears, Berwanger asked for a two-year, $25,000 contract. When told no by George Halas, Berwanger took a job in the foam rubber business where he could make more money.

The List

The Bottom Line

We love football too, but watching the draft is like watching NASCAR drivers wax their cars. Wake us for kick off.
