In an effort to slow China’s bursting population growth, government officials in the late 1970s concocted a policy of one child per family. Because traditional Chinese culture favored males, this meant that hundreds of thousands of baby girls were either aborted or killed just after birth. Today, that backwards thinking and the government’s ill-conceived plan have turned parts of China into a veritable sausage fest. Girls — who were once thought to be expendable — are now highly prized due to the grossly disproportionate gender gap that threatens to leave 30 million men without wives. Desperation? You bet your nonstick wok. Some young men are even marrying within their own family. On the upside, at least they’ll already know their in-laws.

Numbers

80%

Amount of the Chinese population that was illiterate before 1949. Today UNICEF reports that from 2000–2007, Chinese youth ages 15–24 enjoyed a 99% literacy rate — a number easily accomplished when there aren’t any girls left to chase.

Pearl S. Buck, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Good Earth

It’s not just his heart that will wither, Pearl.

Fact

The number one destination for Chinese children adopted abroad is the United States. China has recently placed new restrictions on foreign adoptions, barring applicants who are unmarried, obese, over 50, or who take certain medications. Sorry, Kilstie Arrey!

The Bottom Line

Thirty million dudes without wives? That’s a whole lot of wood whittlin’. It might be wise to get on the Shanghai Stock Exchange now and buy a few hundred shares in a tissue company.
