RI Bans Prostitution -
November 5th, 2009
This past Tuesday, Rhode Island Governor Don Corleone (correction: Carcieri) signed legislation banning prostitution in the Ocean State. Wait, prostitution was legal in Rhode Island? Who knew? This has got to be the worst case of "failure to inform" since Japanese Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda spent 29 years on a remote island in the Philippines subsisting on coconuts under the guise that WWII was still on. Seriously, how did we not know about this? Seems like a no-brainer for a Vegas-type tourism campaign: "Yo Dudes, Prostitution is Legal Here!" It’s not like people are crawling over each other to visit Woonsocket.

Number of brothels Air Force Amy has worked over her 13-year career as a Nevada prostitute. The 43-year-old star of the HBO documentary series Cathouse, Amy earns between $10,000 and $50,000 a month at Dennis Hof’s World Famous Bunny Ranch in Carson City, NV. Way to "Aim High," sister! |

Prostitution is criminal, and bad things happen because it’s run illegally by dirt-bags who are criminals. If it’s legal, then the girls could have health checks, unions, benefits, anything any other worker gets, and it would be far better.

An activist group for American sex workers. Founded in 1973 by feminist Margo St. James, the organization seeks decriminalization of prostitution and other sex-related occupations.

One of the most famous brothels in the United States was The Chicken Ranch, located just outside of La Grange in Fayette County, TX. The brothel inspired not only a ZZ Top hit, but also the Broadway play and film, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. The establishment got its name after the Head Madam lowered prices during the Great Depression, charging one chicken per sex act. The Chicken Ranch operated from 1905 until 1973.
