They’re grown in cow sh*t, aren’t always easy to come by, and after a quick munch, Lewis Carroll’s world becomes your world. Hallucinogenic mushrooms—or rather the psilocybin in them—not only open new doors in the mind, but may soon open new doors to treatment in the medical field as well.

In experiments held in the past few years at John Hopkins medical school, researchers found that giving psilocybin to people dealing with depression and terminal illness allowed them to step outside themselves and their own problems into a higher level of consciousness, understanding, and appreciation. The results were shockingly similar to parking lot research conducted after an Allman Brothers Band concert.
