Animal House  -

July 28th, 2010

Thirty-two years ago today a film was released that would change the way we thought about stress management, folk musicians, and higher education.

For some, Animal House was a fun and raunchy comedic romp. For others, it was an instructional video on how to get the most out of your college years. Road trips, toga parties, scoring with the Dean's wife; many of the film gags became goals of our own before we even broke the plane of the university bookstore.

Discovering the Dean's wife was no Verna Bloom, we decided two out of three wasn't bad.

[What do you think about ... Animal House?]

Amount of the film's gross offered to Donald Sutherland for two days' work. Sutherland declined and wanted money up front. He was paid $50,000, making him the highest-paid cast member (other than Neidermeyer's horse). The decision has been estimated to have cost the actor $20 million.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'll be brief. The issue here is not whether we broke a few rules, or took a few liberties with our female party guests – we did. [winks at Dean Wormer]

Otter pleading the Deltas' case to Dean Wormer and the IFC

double secret probation

noun.     this term from the film has entered the pop culture lexicon to mean the final straw before the foot comes down.

Used in a sentence: Todd had been written up at work three times and technically could be fired, but since his manager is also his buddy, he is on double secret probation.

Studio heads were concerned that the scene where Otter and the crew head to Dexter Lake Club to see Otis Day and the Knights could be considered racist. After the scene was shown to Richard Pryor, who approved, it made the final cut.

Good thing, "Shama Lama Ding Dong" is a classic tune.

The List

Fictional Fraternities

Delta Tau Chi, Animal House The best of the best! Would be honored to pledge if they'd have us.
Lambda Lambda Lambda, Revenge of the Nerds Panty raid video camera? Nuff said! We're in!
Kappa Epsilon Gamma (KEG), 90210 Steve Sanders' house. Some tools, but cooler than Dylan.
Delta Iota Kappa (DIK), Van Wilder Antagonist fraternity spelling out DIK. Knew a few back in the day.
Sigma Lambda Omega (SLO), Saturday Night Live Fraternity that cannot read. Knew a few here, too.

In the pantheon of celluloid tributes to college life, Animal House will always be the high water mark. You don't need to watch the film to relive the memories.

Play the soundtrack and reminisce about your own.
