Hope that candy bar you just inhaled was worth it. You know, on account of you supporting child slavery and all.

That’s right, it’s not just diamonds with blood on them, but chocolate too. We know what you’re thinking… who knew Africa was such a f*cked up place?

Up to 75% of all the world’s cocoa beans come from West Africa. It is believed that up to 100,000 children work in the fields there, many forced against their will. What to do? We say buy slave-free chocolate. And we’re going to, as soon as we polish off this two pound bag of peanut M&M’s.

Fact

In 2001, U.S. lawmakers signed the Harkin-Engel Protocol, a.k.a. Cocoa Protocol. The law was created to put a stop to child labor in the cocoa industry. Sadly, the legislation has done little to thwart the practice.

The List

Chocolate’s Powerful Ingredients

Anti-oxidants Promote cardiovascular health.
Flavanols Improve the circulation to your brain.
Phenethylamine Triggers the release of endorphins i.e. pleasure.
Anandamide Relieves stress, activates the same brain receptors as marijuana.
Theobromine Can be toxic to a dog’s central nervous system and cardiac muscles.

All slavery sucks, but child slavery is abominable. A shame these poor souls don’t work on asparagus farms, it’d make for a much easier boycott.

If you have access, tune in for David McKenzie’s "Chocolate's Child Slaves” on CNN International this Friday, January 20th.
