Thinking About … Banned Books

We want to know what you "think" about.  These short "yes/no/don't care" surveys provide another way for TTP readers to learn, share, and blast off.

Thinking About … Banned Books

My Selectman and Library Board have forbiddeen the Executive Librariian and her staff from participating in any social networking or having administrative access to the computers. This negative group has banned me from associating with the local businesses to brand or raise money with the tool b ar I had designed for raising money for the Library. Talk about control FREAKS.

    BAN CENSORS!

Censorship in almost any form is wrong. It is as I've always said Government should be there to protect people, not to protect people from themselves. This is what parents are for with children and what common sense is there for with adults.

I waffled on the ban of pornography one, since that was the hook that started my husband down the road that led to his now being a registered sex offender. Ultimately I decided banning is banning, no matter what the reason (real or imagined) is. No books should be banned, because once one, just one, is banned, the precedence for banning has been set and will escalate.

I don't even know 35 people. Make it 10 and I'll sign 'em up.

If the sex in the movies is of the passionate nature, then violence IS more offensive. If it's the pornographic kind, it's of the same nature. Pornography is sexual violence.

I'm sorry to hear that your Selectman and Board are so small-minded. I am lucky to have worked in libraries since I was 14 years old, and I never came across the government trying control any of our fundraising. The Board got involved, yes, but they usually supported any efforts made by the Friends or the staff. I guess it all depends on in which state you live. I certainly hope that you can replace the Selectman with your next vote. Hopefully your next Board will have members truer to the sense of a Public Library. Good luck!

The biggest question now faced by democratic society (and this is also in regards to the war on terror) is, Do we tolerate intolerance?

You still ban words, as soon as pretty much any American tv-show that airs here there are beeps for all curses etc. I am not surprised at all about this censorship. “Freedom of speech” – as long as you don't say anything inappropriate.

Censorship is a ban, a ban on thoughts. What those who promote censorship are doing is trying to ban you from thinking, basically because they themselves do not have that much to think about.
Misery loves company, and they just want to drag EVERYONE ELSE down to their unthinking level so that they are not alone!

The American , Canadian , British and a few other countries ban books every day threw the control of the publisher, weather via a lobbyist, a board member or just the owner themselves, money does alot. It is an old boys game that now serves all generations. Simple they do not want people to know the truth for it will put them in a bad light and they(whom ever wants the book not published) will pay lots of money to stop it because the publishing of the book would bring their dirty corrupt lives out into the light hence possible taking away their income. There is also the idea, yes the idea. The books might enlighten people and sprout ideas that people could use for good purposes.

I never read Fanny Hill, but I sure liked Charles Bukowski's early books.
