Thinking About … BP

  • J. Freeman

SERIOUS DOUCHEBAGS! They're fucking up our gulf coastline, and just don't really seem to give a shit. But our government's reactions and plans have been somewhat dubious also… Why would BP care if the Federal Government of the United States is going to treat it like a chinese fire drill, only LESS organized?

  • Jen

BP doesn't seem to care, until it will finally hit their bottom line…oh wait…it won't hit theirs, it will hit OURS in the rising cost of gas.
Go figure, they eff up and we have to pay for it.
I also don't think the government is doing enough about it…let's talk about it, but not issue them fines and what not…they all need fired and we need to start over.

  • Kory Stone

You can't be that ____ to think BP did this on purpose. Get real. Accidents are Accidents. If you want to blame someone blame the environmentalist that drove us to the edge of technology and deep water drilling. You fix a lix a mile under water!

  • Jerryskid89

BP stations are privately owned. The owners hardly make any money on the gas they sell for BP. Most of their profits are from items sold in their stores. Boycotting these stations doesn't help them at all. What would help is filling up somewhere else and going to get a soda or something from a BP.

  • Kbstone

    Get some facts please

  • Kelly

No they didn't do this on purpose. They did this by being cheap. They hired the lowest bidder and put in untested equipment. It is BP's fault. For being cheap.

  • Homer

WHY….so BP can suck up a lil oil without having to drill a new hole.
If it were plugged, there would be no production bonuses.
Campaign contributions will allow the numbers to be fudged on the spill damage quantity.
The press will consider all the coverage a windfall.
The environmental damage will really shift the Green Movement into high gear and probably result in the biggest public works project since the building of the Pyramids of Giza.
Just think of all the people on government assistance without the fishing and tourism industries.
The BP Tops will escape with platinum parachutes and leave the peons to pay the piper.
Foreign help would end the catastrophe sooner and probably hinder the expansion of an even bigger government.

  • Llfarm

Obviously, you're the one in need of facts. BP has a long history of negligence, safety violations, falsified tests and skimping on the important stuff, like routine maintenance. They are by far the worst offender in the oil industry. When your brakes are squealing, you neglect to check them, then they fail and you run over a kid, is it “just” an accident? NO. It must be because the pansy environmentalists made them take asbestos out of the brake pads. It couldn't be your fault. Idiot.

  • BienHoaBaby

BP is the villan, Obama and his administration are the incompetent Keystone Kops. Running around with their billy clubs in the air, their answer is to extort pennies from a multi-billion $$ business. Good political theater but we'll end up paying for the theater tickets at the pump. Take BP before the world court and prosecute for crimes against nature! Shut them down and transfer their oil leases to an American held company with a vested interest in keeping their own back yard clean.

  • Busteryork

Big surprise. Human greed has been screwing up the planet and other people's lives for centuries. Point your fingers and lay the blame, nothing's going to change until all of us take a look in the mirror.

  • jeff m.

GREED… a little will get you off the couch and on to work but as with everything(including beer and chicks), tooooo much is deadly to most life forms, I'm almost-pretty-certain that this is truth with big T
    peace

  • MADAMTWOSWORDS

Please remember, the chairman of BP might be British but we hate him as much as you do in the states, and I don't think he pays any tax to the UK either..
Also remember, it's not British Petroleum any more, it's just BP, us British working class are not responsible for what's happened…. We can't even afford to fill our fuel tanks let-a-lone own BP shares….

  • Kristy

its not my fault a store owners choose to sell BP gas, if i owned a gas station that was BP i would be switching as fast as possible to another brand of gas or selling my store because that .10 cent saving came at a cost that is not worth it. These days where corporations are seen and treated like people the only thing a real person can do is make the right choices with there pocketbooks, so BOYCOTT BP for life and USE LESS ENERGY!!!

  • KbStone

I rest my case regarding getting the facts and understanding the problem.

  • Ur_dude

we are all culpable. we are addicted to cheap energy and we'll do anything to keep the good times rolling. BP screwed up but this screwup happened because the government of the people abrogated their rights and responsibilities to safeguard the resources and environment. so harping on BP is just a cheap cathartic shell game. the oil industry corporations are the only entities that can tackle this problem. the government only seems to know how to drop bombs on Muslims.

  • KLH58215

BP IS JUST ANOTHER NAME FOR BIG POCKETS,AND OUR GOVERNMENT DID NOT REALLY CARE WHAT THEY DID OR WHAT THEY WILL CONTINUE TO DO,DO YOU THINK BP HAS PAID MILLIONS IN LOBBYING TO POLITICIANS,IN SOME STATES IF YOU LITTER AND CAN NOT PAY THE FINE RIGHT AWAY YOU ARE ARRESTED,BUT THEN AGAIN YOU DON'T HAVE BIG POCKETS!

  • Klh58215

yes,a fire drill, where no one puts the fire out!

  • Kklh58215

yeah, kbstone probably works for BP OR OUR GOVERNMENT!

  • MADAMTWOSWORDS

They don't drop bombs on Muslims any-more, they are precision aimed at Muslims…

  • Conservative oilfield prick

There are alot more resources put into this effort than the general public is aware of.

BP gas stations as mentioned below are individually owned franchises… if you own a McDonalds, and the hamburglar goes around and kills a bunch of people, you can't just take down the golden arches and put a crown…

Alternative energy sounds great, but it costs more and it takes oil and gas to produce the plastics and composites that are used to create all of the equipment, insulation and trasmission portions of the systems. These systems are not without problems either. Heavy subsidizing and forced usage has caused major problem's with Spain's economy. We are next – and those franchise owners, and small companies that are going out of business will no longer pay taxes – and you will not receive your welfare check, our economy will go broke and your 12 illegitimate children will starve and resort to eating each other or just turn on you the parent…. peace

Defense Secretary Robert Gates has authorized the deployment up to 17,500 National Guard troops in the four states most affected (to date, 1,612 have been activated).

Approximately 33,900 personnel are currently responding to protect the shoreline and wildlife and cleanup vital coastlines.

More than 6,000 vessels are currently responding on site, including skimmers, tugs, barges, OSVs and recovery vessels to assist in containment and cleanup efforts — in addition to dozens of aircraft, remotely operated vehicles, and multiple mobile offshore drilling units.

Approximately 2.51 million feet of containment boom and 4.04 million feet of absorbent boom have been deployed to contain the spill, and approximately 585,000 feet of containment boom and 2 million feet of absorbent boom are available.

Approximately 24 million gals. of an oil-water mix have been recovered.

Approximately 1.43 million gals. of total dispersant have been applied — 959,000 on the surface and 468,000 subsea. More than 465,000 gals. are available.

255 controlled burns have been conducted, removing a total of more than 6.32 million gals. of oil from the open water in an effort to protect shoreline and wildlife.

17 staging areas are in place to protect sensitive shorelines.

Approximately 173 miles of Gulf Coast shoreline is currently oiled — approximately 34 miles in Louisiana, 41 miles in Mississippi, 39 miles in Alabama, and 59 miles in Florida.

  • Mizzle

The United States Government approved their application, inspected the rig, etc… Let's put the blame squarely where it lies… no pun intended. If I hear “Day One” again I'm going to go ballistic.

Secondly, if the US Government would tell Greenpeace to shove it and allow drilling in shallower waters, this situation would be MUCH easier to fix and may never happen again.

Yes, BP is to blame for the lion's share of this situation. And $20B is a slap in the face to the residents of the Gulf Coast. That's only the beginning.

Now, which would you rather have… nuke plants or oil/coal plants?

  • Gmklly

    Greed sucks…..

  • Send1here

I agree,Boycott BP! BP should comp these station ownwers for fuckin up their business too!

  • Mjbrme

Jerryskid89 – Please remember that BP also owns all of the ARCO gas stations. These stations, at this time, have the lowest prices and so are selling more gas than the other big stations.

  • Ur_dude

in this age of the multinational corporation, I don't think you can honestly associate a corporation with a nation-state, nor do I think it's possible to get a corporation to truly feel responsible for a 'back yard'. I think the answer lies in checks and balances…if there was a strong presence of federal and state agencies when BP was making the 'shortcut' decisions, this could have been prevented. instead our 'leaders-elites' both Dem-Rep decided to de-regulate at every turn, as they got rich while sending our jobs to Mexico and China. the real key that's been missing is an informed and noisy populace. all we've got is the internet!

  • Hansmoerdijk

    power to the sun !!!

  • Kendotek

Is anyone else sick of Obama placing blame and making threats instead of just getting the problem fixed? There will be plenty of time for placing blame later. I suppose Obama is upset since it distracts from his trying to shove his agenda down our throats?

Another point, BP is gonna have to pay up. If anything, we need to continue to patronize BP so that they can pay out all that money to the fishermen, tour operators and others who are losing their livelihood.

    That being said, flame away!

  • Spect8r4no8

All of BP's efforts have been to contain the leak and not stop it. They want to capture as much of the leaking oil to try and offset some of the cost of the leak. The well has been drilled and now they are doing whatever is best to capture the oil but this is not what is best for the environment. The flow of oil could be stopped much easier than trying to capture the oil. They should have stopped the leak and then drilled another well and we wouldn't have all the destruction of the Gulf Coast. Greed made them go in the wrong direction and our government allowed them to do it. Everyone who drives a car and uses oil is also to blame. Yes I'm to blame as well. Close the well down, clean up the spill and let's get on with our lives. Nuclear power is a good means of generating power and should be used. Wind power is another good means of generating power. Bio-fuels should also be used more. We have the technology and we should use it to help prove the new technologies will work. We went to moon and now we should use the same American willpower and knowledge to achieve our goals. Together we can overcome all adversities.
