Corporate Farming is responsible for people being overweight? What a load of bullshit! The animals produced today are leaner and more healthy then ever before and fruits and vegetables are more available and less expensive. The problem lies in the fact that because we have decrease costs for consumers, they eat more. Dont’ blame obesity problems on Farmers…look in the mirror you idiots.

People are unhealthy because of their choices. Plain and simple. Walk away from the TV, the game box, the computer – WALK! Then run, play, do anything that gets your heart rate up. And no, just because the restaurant you frequent gives you three times a normal meal does not mean you have to eat it in one sitting. Embrace the doggie bag!nnWe have lost the understanding of a portion. Read the labels…. most people are shocked when they realize what a portion is. If nothing else, keeping to a healthy weight will keep your budget in better shape too. If your entire family consumes a 6,000 calorie a day diet, then that’s 3 times what you should be paying for food…. think about it!

I agree that corporate farming is not directly responsible for people being overweight however they do contribute to the problem. Yes they have made most produce really cheap but I would argue that it is not as nutritious anymore. There have been a reasonable number of studies that have shown that both the milk & meat from free range cows contain a wider variety of nutrients than factory farmed cows. This is most likely due to the fact that factory farmed cows are primarily fed corn (something they are not naturally built to digest) so they only get the nutrients that are in corn. The biggest problem I see with corporate farming is monoculture. There is a good reason that nature favors diversity.nnThe one point that you make that I do disagree with is the animals being healthier. The average American is not eating free range chickens (which are 3-4 times more expensive) but battery farmed chickens. I do not see a chicken that cannot stand by itself (due to oversized breast) has no beak (incase it pecks itself or another chicken) and being fed a consent supply of antibiotics as a healthy animal.nnAlso if factory farmed and beef / pork was so healthy why does it have to be ammonia washed / irradiated etc?nnThe problem with corporate farms is that they focus on quantity rather than quality. There are a reasonable number of businesses that have shown that you can make just as much money if you focus on quality. If you look at the amount of food that is wasted in the western world I think that there is definitely room for shifting the quality vs quantity scale without affecting people’s access to food.

I agree that Corporate Farming is not entirely to blame, but I do have to say that having seen chickens in cages that they cannot turn around in and cows in cages that they cannot turn around in tells me that there is something wrong in the method we use for raising our meat. They are also not healthier than ever since there is still Salmonella transmitted through eggs. The animals are also given antibiotics on a regular basis. If they were healthy, there would be no need for antibiotics. The way we eat is what makes us fat, not these farms, but the animals in corporate farms are not healthy.

So the change in nutrient levels in the basics means a person should eat nothing but double bacon cheeseburgers till they drop dead, then blame the farmers?nnOrganic foods are available. Large volume food of a lesser quality is more afforable. Neither stop a person from eating healthy. The person does.

Obviously, there is no one reason that people are overweight, but rather a myriad of factors. The biggest obviously is that people eat too much and exercise too little. nnToday’s list was showing some other mitigating factors that break down that simplicity. nnRegarding corporate farming, check out the movie, Food Inc. It may not be completely fair and balanced, but it does raise some interesting questions. Fast Food Nation is a fascinating read as well.
