Thinking About … Californication

I’m mad at Hank right now. The one thing that kept me lovin’ him (other than because he’s beau-tee-ful) is his relationship with his daughter. When she started that teenage rebellion, of course she was difficult. I didn’t like her, either. But Hank has been acting like a rebellious teenager his entire life and everyone keeps putting up with his bullshit. I didn’t like how he treated her, how he talked to her, how he dealt with her problems. It made that “good dad” shine fade off of him, and all that was left was a bag o’ douche. nnMaybe I just overthink it. I’ll still check in with Hank to see what’s up this year.

“Californication” was not invented by the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1999. Twenty seven years earlier (1972) I had a bumper sticker on my 1963 Galaxy 500 XL that read “Texan Go Home. Don’t Californicate New Mexico” The term was in common use.

F**k the Red Hot Chili Doobers & their suit. Sorry, boys, but we Oregonians were talking about being Californicated in the late ’70s & early ’80s when Californians were movin’ north by the thousands to pick off what was considered our cheap real estate. Our then Gov. Tom McCall invited ‘em to visit but don’t stay.nnDJ in Portland, OR

The Rheostatics 1992 song “California Dreamline” uses the word “californication”. Fuck the ‘Chili Peppers for thinking they have ownership on a regular slang word.
