Thinking About … Cassettes

Awwww. The mix tape. I still have a few cassettes in a box in my storage room.

Does anyone else remember those kiosks (at the “Wherehouse”?) that could spit you out a customized cassette tape? That was back in what, 1991? I can recall griping about having to pay something like a dollar per track… Now, in 2010 dollars, a buck per track seems more down to earth.

Making a mix tape is sort of a lost artform, given today's click and drag ease of use and access to vast libraries to begin with. Maybe I'm gettin old, but mix tape>playlist! Now I need to see if I can unearth my New Wave mix from 1989!

I liked tapes cuz they saved my LP's. I didn't have to play them so much.
Also tapes gave us the power to make our own edits and “custom” recordings.

thought i was in the closet on this one but now i can rewind/fast foward
knowing i have kindred spirits out there. thank the godz for “retro”
so much precious analog material i can't let go. thanks

    They were better than 8-tracks

Cassettes last and hold their integrity longer than CDs. they are also reparable. I have several thousand that are over 30 years old and they still sound great.

ah, i fondly recall the days of sitting by the radio, waiting for my favorite song to come on so i could quickly hit the record button on the tape deck!

i like cds/ipods for the convenience, honestly, but i still take *hours* to make cd mixes and ipod playlists. the art of the mix didn't die with cassette tapes! i always include a “DO NOT SHUFFLE [at least until you've played it through once.]” caveat to mixes i give to people. :o )

Should I be embarassed that I've reduced my 400 some cassette collection (of mostly originals) to a 200 some cassette collection? I actually just played one of my oldest mixed tapes (Dougie Fresh, etc.) the other day for my four-year-old son who wanted to breakdance in the kitchen. I still lament the loss of my favorite mixed tape years ago in a friend's dorm room. – 40- year-old music lover

It's funny how in those days I would never lend anybody my cassetes, cause each one was a treasure and if you lost it, it was a disaster.

Today, I could easily wipe out 10 gigs of music, knowing that it's all on the web and free.

ii don t want put money in my car so i listen cassette

  • Voxtrax

I kinda miss them. You didn’t have to handle them so carefully, you could do your own klunky edits – like looping the moaning session on Bon Jovi’s “Social Disease” intro about 6 times.

I’m 18 years old and I’ve been collecting cassette tapes for about 4 years now. I’ve just been buying them in Goodwills and Salvation Armys as I come across them, and I’ve also received them as gifts. My collection is edging around 200 cassettes now.
