Thinking About … Cigarette Labels

not sure what the deal is here? u00a0if you have lived near a Canadian border, or have been there, you have seen this type of packaging before ; i t i only making its way south.u00a0

  • Upinsmoke

Australia has had them for years, the next moveu00a0down thereu00a0is to remove distinctive packaging, that is, to make all brands look the same, except for the name. Stores are no longer allowed to display cigarettes either, they’re behind a screen or locked out of sight.

While we are all at the mercy of advertising, I think the “on-package” cautions have gotten out of hand. Maybe its the lawyers that make all this stuff necessary by suing anyone and everyone over any potential product. Legislation of morality is one thing…..adding more and more bizarre cautions to the fine print on ANY product is another.

  • MadTurki

And north!u00a0 This packaging is in some places in South America as well.

  • Diggerjohn111

I think all these warnings are just going to have the opposite effect. They certainly don’t work in Canada. As Denis Leary said, ‘They could give cigarettes a black label, with a skull and cross bones and call them “Tumours”, and people would line up around the block to buy them.”.

  • Diggerjohn111

I am a Canadian. We made the labelling into a game, the worse the condition on the package, the more points.

I find the whole thing insulting.u00a0 Like some smart ass kid droning on about a smoker’s lung compared to a regular lung when someone steps away for a cig.u00a0 I smoke, I know it’s bad for me, the pictures are just going to piss me off.u00a0 Guess I should get a fancy cigarette case.

I was in Thailand a couple years ago where they have these “warning pictures” on their smokes. Most were pretty disgusting, but one had a guy holding a baby blowing smoke into its face. Hilarious. I bought that pack on the spot.

C’mon…do we need the government to look out for us so much? There is enough evidence to point to the fact that cigarettes are bad for you. I am not a smoker but I say if people want to smoke, let them! All of this hand-holding government-knows-best bullshit is pussifying us. Seriously, if the price of cigarettes doesn’t put someone off smoking…nothing will. $60 per carton? Really?nnJust because you smoke doesn’t mean that you absolutely will get cancer or emphysema, just as because you don’t smoke doesn’t mean that you won’t. nI had cancer in my jaw, a type of cancer common to those that chew tobacco…but I have never used any tobacco product ever.nnYou’re pretty much damned if you do and damned if you don’t.

Smoking is a nasty habit that I’m glad I never got into.u00a0 I am asthmatic and never did smoke.u00a0 However, I feel that it a person wants to make that decision after knowing all about the drug they are getting involved in, I encourage them to do so.u00a0 I encourage all drug use.u00a0 If you know all of the possible hazards and still wish to go ahead and do that drug, I want you to do so.u00a0 Legalize everything.u00a0 That way the hard core drug users will OD themselves within a couple of months.u00a0 That will help our overpopulation problems a little.u00a0 Up the education and set us free of our chains.u00a0 Publicize how terrible tobacco, heroin, and acid are for our health.u00a0 Encouage the education, but set free the toxin.u00a0 Poison yourself if you wish.u00a0 I know better than to start.u00a0 I did formerly smoke marijuana.u00a0 I knew that it was not physically addictive.u00a0 I knew where the plant started out.u00a0 I knew our founding fathers smoked the good plants from their hemp fields.u00a0 The current research is showing that it might just be good for you!u00a0 I stopped because I found myself craving the high and wanted to break free of the cycle.u00a0 I did so in under a month.u00a0 I don’t tell anyone not to smoke pot or tobacco.u00a0 If they think they enjoy it, go right ahead.u00a0 Just don’t tell me what to do.

As far as the FDA looking out for us, since when do they do that?u00a0 They allow aspartame in our foods even though it will explode at high temperature.u00a0 It comes from a hazardous chemical.u00a0 They are like most government agencies.u00a0 They will support whatever they are paid to support.

I tend to agree……somewhat.u00a0 Maybe you are one of the courteous smokers out there, but there are many who flaunt their smoking like like a “drag queen with a boner.”u00a0 I don’t like having to walk through a smoker’s lung fumes when walking into a restaurant, or worse, up to the main entranceu00a0of a hospital where I am visiting a cancer stricken friend.u00a0 Smoke yourself into frenzy and enjoy every puff.u00a0 But damnation, give the rest of us a break and keep your smoke to yourself.

  • Necrum

This has been tried in Australia, and failed.u00a0 Wound up with construction workers cutting out the images to replicate a face on their hard hats.u00a0 Now they are banning all forms of advertising in shops, plus legal requirements that all tabacco products be kept from site.u00a0 Their next step is to try and force through plain packaging so that all brands of smokes have the same olive green pack and look identical.u00a0 Still won’t work.

I can’t understand why big tobacco is supposed to be anti-marijuana…u00a0 Instead of fighting it, it would make more sense join up and participate in the marijuana industry. u00a0 Let’s let the tobacco farmers become marijuana farmers, instead!

  • Saltinewarrior3000

Spot on, about most of what you said…but, I have to disagree about one point.u00a0 Unfortunately, the FDA isn’t like “most government agencies.”u00a0 Most of the government is only marginally corrupt.u00a0 The FDA is one of ~the~ most blatantly corrupt agencies on the planet.u00a0 As you mentioned: their “approval” about what you eat and take for medication is sold to the highest bidder.u00a0 In America, we’re “protected” from all those evil remedies that have been used in other countries for hundreds…sometimes thousands…of years.u00a0 Why?u00a0 One reason: Big Pharma can’t make a buck off of it.nnAnyway, back to the main topic.u00a0 The fact is, people are going to engage in their addiction no matter what warnings you give, no matter what pictures you slap on it, and no matter how much you tax it…or even if it’s illegal.u00a0 Prohibition didn’t stop people from drinking.u00a0 Drug laws don’t stop people from doing drugs.u00a0 So, smokers are gonna smoke.u00a0 But, as I like to remind them, they’ll all stop smoking…eventually. u00a0 u00a0 u00a0

  • Trishamiss

We’ve had these terrible pictures on cigarettes in Canada for quite a few years now. I gotta tell you, it doesn’t stop people from buying them. If anything, if people don’t like to look at the pictures they just pick up a spiffy cigareet tin.

Increase pricing, graphic warning (more nasty look than the ones you showed)? Malaysia have it.nnu00a0
