Thinking About … Commercial Volume

    it’s been against the law to kick up volume on commercials for years — what they *supposedly* do instead is kick the EQ up on all frequencies so it *seems* louder and jumps out of the teevee speakers more

    It’s so annoying. It does NOT make me WANT whatever product they’re piping through my ear drums either. It just makes me want to change the channel to a normal volume -having tv SHOW. Besides, if we want it, we’ll go get it. No need to show us on tv

  • Mark20

    I DID once drive 45 minutes to find a Sonic, purely as a thank you, because their commercials made me laugh so many times….

  • SilverTonguedSerpent

    Easy solution.u00a0 DVR.u00a0u00a0 I haven’t watched a commercial in months.u00a0 If you’re watching live…just pause itu00a0when the commercials come on and FF when you’re ready to watch again.

    and NOTHING pisses me off more than ads being inserted into the actual show!u00a0 I recall “Bones” did an entire episode hawking Avatar.u00a0 Another “Bones” episode (and a Warehouse 13 episode) had some REAL cheesy car commercials tied into the character dialogue.u00a0

    Because of the Subway commercials with the two office workers (Todd and Samantha) with dubbed in child like voices……(“Hey, Todd.u00a0 Would you like to be my boyfriend? Sure Samantha! Thenu00a0gimme my melt.), I would not walk across the street for one of their damn sandwiches.u00a0 Loud….and absolutely no quality to the ad.u00a0 Like some of the feminine hygiene commercials that come on when you are eating dinner, or the erectile disfunction med adsu00a0that come on when you have the grandchildren over.u00a0 It is notu00a0just a “volume thing”…..it is a “content thing.”u00a0 I really want to listen to some bitch talk to her mother about not “being fresh down there” while I am eatingu00a0a pepperoni and sausage pizza.u00a0 Or some geezer and geezist plan their day around his erection.u00a0 Give me the Geico, Bud Lite, and pet food commercials any day of the week.

    Ban trumpets. Problem solved. There has never in human history been a piece of music that is enhanced by this instrument of the devil. It’s original design was to meant to instil fear into opposing armies, not sooth the savage beast, and it has been accomplishing that well ever since.

    Heh, even worse, they have the same dialogue but in regular adult voices for the radio ad, so the 2 cent joke is completely lost. Seriously bad;

  • Larry

    I have taken a sound meter to the TV to record the volume of the commercials versus the TV shows and find a consistent 20 DB differential. I filed a complaint with Comcast to no avail.

  • yankeepizzabaker

    I am sure they did not pay a bit of attention to your complaint……you, and the rest of the consumers, are just paying customers……Our dollars don’t carry the influence of pharmaceutical companies, fast food corporations…..or even douche bag vendors!!!u00a0 Try eating a double stuffed taco and havingu00a0u00a0one of the feminine hygeine ads come on….ARE THERE NO FEMINISTS OUT THERE READING THIS…..I have been trying to get a rise out of you (no pun intended) all day……ha, ha!

    i was flabbergasted, every time a news report stated that the ads were no louder than the shows, then an ad aired! u00a0thanks to this, i now know the reason and i wonder who (specifically) paid for the studies and to whom the money went. u00a0am i mistaken that there was a ruling/statement by the FCC (several years back)? u00a0it was all over the news? u00a0i never heard anyone mention that the ads could NOT be louder than the LOUDEST volume within the program? u00a0maybe that’s why i slept to nick@nite. u00a0(i haven’t been able to sleep there in years.) u00a0

    admittedly, i am fairly new to dvr and i only record shows that i intensely wish to view. u00a0i have noticed that some shows make it quite easy for one to know when exactly to hit the “play” button! u00a0 wink, wink!

    this is the story i have “heard” for so many years. u00a0idk “EQ level” (because i am an idiot) but this issue of tp (did i misread?) convinced me that the loudest sound in the ad must be no louder than the loudest sound in the show. u00a0therefore, if someone slams a door in the “show”, that sound-level (at all equalizer-levels) becomes the normal “talk-level” for any advertiser who wishes to?
