Thinking About … Freegans

I can appreciate the point that the Freegans are making. When I was serving in the Army, I would watch as fellow Joes would pile up their mess hall trays, just to toss out half of it. Or, when in Iraq, so many younger soldiers just had to have a refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker in their barracks! They would display typical consumerist American behaviors (want and waste) in front of the international community, and I felt myself becoming embarrassed that Iraqi’s and the coalition forces think that all Americans are like that.

The most interesting TP I’ve read. Thanks.

Yeah, its all well and good until everyone does it. If everyone is dumpster diving who is tossing out the crap? This is the problem with this type of thinking. Eventually you run out of other peoples junk and since the market has been decimated by not buying the junk soon runs out.

Upcycling stuff that is going to be thrown away BEFORE it hits the dumpster is a great way to save energy, water, CO2 emissions, and pollution. Check out LOOPTWORKS – they are doing it with cool clothes and even laptop sleeves made out of leftover wetsuit material. Why is it called upcycling instead of recycling? Because they use industrial excess (brand new stuff that gets leftover at the factory and is headed for the dump) instead of post consumer excess – that can be recycled. rn

The questions are thought provoking. I hate wasting anything.
