Thinking About … Kraft Dinner

  • UglyShirts

Maybe it's because I'm from Wisconsin originally, but I cannot stomach boxed Mac and Cheese. It utterly repulses me. Something about the fakeness of the day-glo orange powder. I've eaten one forkful in my life, and I almost vomited from reflex.

I'll never understand why people eat pseudo-food. Especially when it takes almost as little of an effort to boil macaroni, layer it with REAL cheese in a casserole dish, and then bake it. at 350° for 15 minutes.

Kraft 3 cheese shells are “ultra crunk and hella ballin'!”

  • Michael

Why are Kraft Dinner boxes half empty space?

  • Bacsimap

I once had a roommate who bought Kraft mac & cheese, dumped the cheese packet and used his mom's home-canned spaghetti sauce. When I asked him why he didn't buy macaroni in bulk and save some money, he replied that the amount of mac in the Kraft package was just right for him. So I used the cheese on my bulk mac. Best roommate ever.

Why doesn't it taste good reheated? Tastes like cardboard the 2nd time around.

mac and cheese saved my life when i first started college. my mom used to go to costco and buy big huge boxes and send them to me. i ate it for breakfast lunch and dinner. thanks to kraft, i'm a better american.

My family was broke-ass-broke when I was a kid and it was either fried potatoes or mac-n-cheese for eats unless I was at my mamaw's house. 20 years later now, and I cannot stomach fried potatoes…but still loves me some mac-n-cheese. Boxed Mac-n-Cheese is still cheap as chips.

Now why, pray tell, is it called “Kraft Dinner” in Canada (and probably everywhere else) but “Macaroni and Cheese” here in the US?

  • Jeffarocks

In college, i'd mix in canned mushrooms. the humanity.

  • Bam

Because some people, like me and several more college students, don't have an oven and the microwave doesn't have 350° for 15 minutes.

Oddly enough, Kraft M&C came up in conversation w/ friends last week. We got into a discussion about what our moms served with it when we were kids—and how we still put the combo together as adults. It was pretty rangy. I'm dying to know what the Toilet Paper crowd would answer! Our household mix? Hot buttered toast + Mac-n-Cheese. Yow, yow!

I fear that I can't stand powdered cheese. Give me real cheese or at least fake gooey cheese stuff instead of powdered. I've never gotten that stuff to taste anything like real cheese. If there were another flavor in the powder instead of fake cheese taste, I might go for Kraft again. Meanwhile I will stick to the other brands that give me some good flavor. When you bargain shop, you find that you can get anything cheap. I love Pasta Sides and Pasta Roni, both of which include some sort of mac-n-cheese. Both cost only $1 when you find them on sale.

Add just the right amount of butter and milk, it tastes down right yummo! I as well as my kids, love it!

  • LyLL447

Love Kraft Mac & Cheese! I add a little less butter and milk and shredded cheddar cheese with pepper -so good!

  • Marlio

Sorry guys. I have had my share of Kraft's mac'n'cheese over the years but it is not even the same dish as homemade.

Mac & Cheese with Gordon's Fish Sticks … a supper fit for royalty

I have studied Kraft Dinner, and made Kraft Dinner art. Here is the scoop. Mention Kraft Dinner and most people have a strong, visceral reaction. They strongly associate Kraft Dinner and their youth or college days. If they had a happy childhood or enjoyed college, they love the glowing comfort food. If associated with sadness, they hate it.

  • kak

Huh. I liked mine with peas. Gourmet!

  • Kendotek

Ever add not just canned tuna, but also some frozen broccoli and cheese? It turns a pot of humble mac and cheese into something more interesting. Or some canned peas and mushrooms in with the tuna (of course, adding some slices of cheese always helps). Its sorta like a stove top casserole. Gee, I may have to make some when I get home.

Among the Pensioner Brigade here in jolly old England, Kraft (we spell it craft) stands for; “Can't remember a fúcking thing”…

is it true that America now has History about it's self, going back nearly 25 years ?….

O.M.G. No wonder a lot of you Americans are all fat Bastards…

It's what they make cardboard from, I thought everyone knew that!!…

  • Do

I've never eaten Mac and Cheese, ever.

  • Samnmini

You have described a past Friday night staple for Catholics. Still don't know why eating a pork chop, etc., was verboten.

  • redline

Love real mac & cheese and rarely ever use the boxed stuff since my kids are now grown, great stuff when you are broke. Great to feed a crowd of people or little kids. Tuna in it is gross as well as canned peas, the peas break and turn it a ugly green/gray color. Most frozen vegies work great.
Chopped up hot dogs in it or hamburger makes a great meal.
To make it taste better when reheated you need to add a little butter.
Mostly used to buy store brand or a cheaper brand, Kraft is too expensive and not necessarily better flavor then the cheap versions.

Nector of the gods! I turn a 4-serving box into ONE humongus taste treat

  • AVSow08

Let me just say as a college student, after a night of getting shit faced when all the stores/restaurants are closed…its nice to go into my stash of easy mac and cheese, pop it in the microwave and go to town!!!

  • JA

Had Mac & Cheese 5 nights a week while in college. Splurged on Friday nights by adding a can of Spam. Now almost 4 decades later the gag reflex still kicks in when I see the boxes on grocery shelf.

I grew up on Kraft Deluxe. If I was served macaroni and cheese at the homes of friends or the school cafeterias, I used to wonder what they had done wrong. Still prefer the Deluxe. If I get Pasta-Roni, etc., I cut done the amount of milk or water called for to get a thicker sauce. I learned this from my mother. She used to halve the amount of water in Jello, too. Which is why I don't like THAT made by anyone else either.

  • Lester

about the fat bastards, i think we got it from u. check out the world news if u don't agree.

  • Toppresenter

Only use the kind that has “Real” artificial cheese like Velvita . Just add splash milk and it's ready.

  • Oldigor

Mac & Cheese keep me alive when I was playing music on the road. Add any canned meat or fish product to it and feast. We took notice of how black musicians survived the “Chitlin Circuit” and applied them to our situation.

  • Oldigor

    Sorry you missed out.
