Thinking About … Latino Heat

A true Mexican would only be offended if mistaken for an Argentineu00a0

“Mexican” is not a derogatory word, but depending on its use, it can be come one. u00a0Just like “Jewish,” said by some people it can become an insult based on their intended use. u00a0However, “Mexican” is usually directed toward someone who is of Hispanic decent, whereas “Jewish” isn’t always used toward someone who is Jewish. u00a0All said, calling someone a Mexican who is in fact Mexican shouldn’t be derogatory any more than calling someone American or Russian or Italian, if the person is of that heritage.

Based upon her reasoning, we’re not Americans, we’reu00a0Caucasians. u00a0Mexican is 100% correct. u00a0She was only hearing part of the conversation as she probably thought you were referring to all persons of Latin origin as Mexican and wanted to start an argument. u00a0It’s a good thing I wasn’t there because she would have gotten one

Personally, I fail to see why you should care or be concerned about what this idiot didn’t like. She had no damned business injecting herself into your conversation. You should have (politely or otherwise) told her to “fornicate” off.

Called a Mexican does beat “wetback!”

  • BDUB

I was under the impression that Mexico was notu00a0 “Latin America” and so it would actually be incorrect to call a Mexican a Latino. They would more correctly be called Hispanic and more specifically Chicano (Xicanos). Assuming you are referring to their ethnicity and not their nationality, of course (it seems many don’t know the difference there either).nnIt would seem the woman was not only wrongfully offended, but just plain wrong.

  • Mike Michaelo

As to whether I’d return to Mexico, NO FUCKING WAY!!!!!

  • Hilndr1

I am am Mexican. I would preferred to be called a Mexican first then to be called a Latino or Hispanic.

  • Grandenchilada

Neither “Jew” or “Mexican” are derogatory terms. People who use these terms in a derogatory way under any circumstance are called racists.

  • Grandenchilada

Mexico is geographically part of North America but culturally part of Latin America. Mexicans are “Latinos” just like any other people of Spanish speaking nationalities. Chicanos are those Mexicans who are born in the United States of America. All these terms are only useful so white people have some way to give Hispanics or Latinos a name.

The reason for the freak out is simple….a few years back it was general practice to call anyone who spoke Spanish as their native language a Mexican.u00a0 While this is fine for those hailing from Mexico, the average Panamanian might be offended to be lumped in (think of someone calling all Americans British because they speak English).u00a0 Thus Latino was adopted, and has been very successful in infiltrating modern parlance.u00a0 So successful, that describing the average Latino–that you know NOTHING about– as Mexican can be somewhat insulting.u00a0 Mexicans that I know are fine being called Mexican (why wouldn’t they be), and you were correct in describing Israel as such.u00a0 Unfortunately, hot churro girl has not gone through life needing to use her brain and assumed that you are some sort of culture blind pig grouping Mexico with all other Latin countries by describing a Latino boxer as Mexican.u00a0u00a0 Hence the offense.

  • Zee

Actually, the reason why they are called latinos is because they speak a romance language (which, actually, can even include the french and the portuguese/brazilian); neither hispanic nor latino refers to any race, as someone with a latino/hispanic ethnicity can be of any race.u00a0nThe problem arises from the US gov trying to define everything by its own standards, and I think it was in ’97 when they defined latino as “persons who speak spanish, who have spanish heritage, or who identify that they have spanish heritage. The difference between latino and hispanic is basically this: if you are proud of your Spanish heritage, you might call yourself a Hispanic; if you think the Spanish committed horrible crimes against the different people they invaded, you might consider yourself a latino; Chicano can be a horrible term if said to the wrong person/age, and that refers so someone born in the US with Mexican descent, which I think this boxer is not. So you’re plain wrong.u00a0nn

Calling me British is derogatory ????? It wouldn’t be offensive, just a mistake, because I’m American. I’m British American from like 200 years ago. But if they called me a Brit, I wouldn’t get huffy about it. I’ve been called alot of things in life, no need being uptight about simple things

  • Jimmy

One what ?…….They already said she was HOT !!! We put up with a lot of S**T just because they are Hot.

The two terms are both correct. My wife is Peruvian/Latina whichever you want to say. I have manyu00a0Mexicanu00a0friends, and they never bat an eye and call themselvesu00a0Latino/a also. Only when discussing something broadly affecting allu00a0Latinosu00a0or tou00a0separateu00a0themselves from other groups ie gringo for example do they sayu00a0Latino/a.

  • Crazy

Did you know the actor that does the Dos Equis commercials is not Mexican?nnThose are the stupidest commercials.u00a0 Fire the guy that came up with that ad campaign!

  • Juan

I was born in Tampico, Mexico. My entire extended family was born in Mexico. I am now a citizen of the United States and practice Neurology in Houston, Texas.nnnYou can call me Mexican. You can call me American. You can call me Latino or Hispanic. None of these terms carry any negativeu00a0connotationu00a0whatsoever and so I welcome them.u00a0nI do find the term Mexican-American a bit ridiculous. I may be wrong but to call my children that would imply that they are somehow different than their Mexicanu00a0ancestors.u00a0u00a0African-Americans are different than the Africans theyu00a0descendedu00a0from. My kids are no different than their non-American cousins, and I doubt that their kids will be any different u00a0from me. 5-6 generations from now, then okay. u00a0 u00a0u00a0

    This is very, very true.u00a0
