Thinking About … Referees

I’ve refereed and coached. Both suck. Coaching may suck more…because you only have the illusion of authority. You’re decisions are always called into question. And, when the team wins, the players get the credit…when they lose, the coach gets blamed.

Of all the bad officials, none can be worse than Ed Hoculi. That man deserves all the hate mail and death threats. Even if my team benefits from a blown call, I don’t like it. It taints the win for me. I’ve even heard theories that he is there to protect Las Vegas interests. Football fans (NFL, not soccer), check out Ed Hochuli on YouTube… some funny there!

Officiated intramural s in college late 70′s. Was threatened after games by players. Most didn’t know the rules and would argue every call. Supervised officials who were calling a great game and players still argued which as an official makes you tune out legitimate complaints. Sportsmanship was alot better then, would hate to do it now.

I don’t know what has happened with NCAA football officiating, but it has reached comical status. I won’t say what team, since it doesn’t really matter, but at one game the opposing coach walked all the way out to mid-field to yell at a ref. The players followed him out. That is a major penalty, but the ref just sat there and allowed it. The number of flagrant helmet to helmet attacks (after the play is dead) against the QB without a penalty has been completely unacceptable. It’s getting to the point where I’m about ready to say, “Do it. Take that ref out. Teach him a lesson.”

I umpired baseball, reffed football and basketball for a peewee league years ago. The worst part was the way the parents acted. nnI wouldn’t want to ref or ump today. Too many crazy parents and coaches. I think the problem is, there is too much money tied up in sports today. Everyone thinks they are the next Nolay Ryan, Michael Jordan, or Peyton Manning.

Amen! Used to volunteer at the YMCA. Coached and reffed soccer at same time because parents wouldn’t- didn’t have the time. Parents got so bad that called time, handed whistle to guy and said you ref and I”ll coach my team. I actually knew the guy and his kid. Offered parents coaching job when they interfered but none would coach their own kids. If I’m not getting paid my tolerance for that crap was low.
