Thinking About … Sensitivity

  • Sourceofase

wait, how is this offensive again?

  • Mike

Kudos to the “….wait he laughed and moved on.” line….had me LOL for real (LOLFR?)

  • Bethie_d

Oh puh-leeze! This whole political correctness thing has gotten out of hand. I don’t mind if someone calls me fat – I am. If they called me “weight challenged” or whatever the pc term is, THEN I would be pissed.

  • Chalupa

Political correctness has evolved into political censorship.

  • Michael

The offensiveness of this is utilizing the word “gay” when the person would actually use the word “dumb”, “stupid”, “assinine”, etc. That’s what the issue is – I hate to say this, but too many people take their cues from popular media as to what is acceptable and what is not. Somehow, I don’t think you would try to use the “N” word anymore to try to be funny – and why not? Because it has a negative stereotype associated with it. That’s the issue here, plain and simple.

I’ve always been pissed off that the word “gay” has been co-opted and no longer has the original meaning. Why are men who are attracted to other men the only ones now who can be ‘gay’? nnIn Kentucky, it used to be that “the darkies were gay” (My Old Kentucky Home is the state song written by Stephen Foster), but since 1986 when the lyrics were revised by House Resolution 159, “the people are gay.” I can vouch that not everyone in Kentucky is male or gay!

  • Chucksheppard7

Robert heinlein said a mature rational society needed only 2 laws.n1. You should not annoy other people andn2. you should not be too easily annoyed.nWe are a long way from a mature rational society especially #2

  • Joel

Michael hit the nail on the head. When “gay” is used in the context of the character in the movie, a negative is implied. Anyone who supports the use of the term “gay” in such a context – and argues the PC police are out to get them – doesn’t understand the power of language. Question for lksugarman from Kentucky: why did your legislature change the work “darkies” to “people”? Because it was, and is, offensive. So is the “N” word. What if Ronnie used the term “Jewish” or “Christian” in a derogatory context?

Censorship has gone to far – What is wrong with a Halloween party – not “Fall Festive”… and Christmas party – not “winter solistice??? I thought in this country the majority ruled – not some small interest group that got their collective panties in a wad I will probably piss a few people off (just by saying “piss” but isn’t that my right under freedom of speech??Good lord lets call a spade a spade, a donkey an ass, and be done with it!

People that are this easily offended need to grow up and find something useful to do. If the term was faggish I think that would be comparable to the use of the N word as a pejorative but otherwise… get over it.

  • Electric cars are gay

this is just a perfect example of the pussification of america.

  • houndogg

to me, the MOST offensive word i hear… used WAY too much.. is the “R” word that some people use to describe special needs, but also use to describe something as being stupid. i hate it so much, that i won’t type it here. it really makes me sad th hear people use it. and i try to correct people i care about when i hear them use it…

  • Trey

The fact that this has even been an issue is GAY!rnrn… and, Electric cars are totally gay.

  • http://www.unicornbooty.com Booty the Unicorn

Saying that something is “gay” in a society that doesn’t have equal rights for gays is just unnecessary. Use a different line and move on.nnHow would people have reacted if it was “Electric cars are so hispanic” or “Electric cars are so black” or [insert your sub-group of people here].nnIn case you forgot “gay” refers to a group of actual human beings, not some concept or other intangible things. nnAnd we wonder why gay kids are killing themselves every day? Stop using “that’s gay” because it does actually hurt real people in real time as young people in society take their cues from those around them – as well as those creating popular media.

  • Rfj5

PC is the weapon with no defense. By arguing that you are not something just makes it more clear to the accuser of your guilt. n Standing up for your rights and pushing your agenda are two entirely different things. What about my right to see any movie I want? What about my right to free speech? We are much tougher than the special interest groups give us credit for.

  • Balcerowskir

i’m a gay male and it was’nt offensive to me.npeople need to lighten up

  • Rottie

Most Americans don’t speak English anymore. It has become an abbreviated texting society. So, little wonder that no one seems to remember that “gay” means merry. Also known as happy. If more people would pick up a dictionary rather than an I-Pod, they might know that.

  • http://twitter.com/brookish brooke shelby biggs

Well, considering that “gay” in this context means “stupid, useless, or effette,” then yes, it is offensive because you are equating those things with millions of people’s identities.nnI think maybe given the fact that gay kids are killing themselves by being bullied and by being exposed to repeated reinforcement that who they are is unworthy and shameful, appropriate sensitivity is called for. Would you say “that’s so black” or “that’s so Asian” to describe something you didn’t approve of or downright disdained? No.

  • not sensitive

    Banning words is gay.

  • Swaag

All I can say is “Thank Gawd for the Sickle Cell”

  • Pablo Perez

If the majority truly ruled in this country we would still not allow women to vote and very likely blacks would still be enslaved. It’s a good thing that sometimes we allow the sensitivities of a few dictate the laws of our society.

  • Viabianchi

    Amen

  • mozolini

except… Electric cars aren’t “stupid” or “asinine”. To the character in the movie, he thinks they’re “gay”. Most of us know it wouldn’t be appropriate to really use in a board meeting: Hence, it’s funny to hear aloud from an actor who has the history and timing to always sound funny on screen.

  • Streenz

I have a female friend whose name is Gay, should I now introduce her to other people as “everyone this is my female friend whose name is Gay and she isn’t” ACLU get a life, those that are offended with the use of gay in a sentence, get a life and so on. Life is to short for this trivia, and its obvious that those that are offended by the use of this word in a sentence are oblivious to what really is going on in the world around them, I’ll say it again…….GET A LIFE

  • MaryL

Norman Lear adapted the premise of a British series for All In The Family, so in a way, he didn’t create Archie Bunker. (Who was originally called Archie Justice, btw.) rnrnI believe some of us are too sensitive and that some others are far too uncaring. I prefer to avoid the latter.

  • Veronica

Those rules are similar to my classroom rules when I was a teacher. Easy to remember, not easy to follow…

  • Anonymous

Its RETARDED to become so easily upset by words like GAY! Seriously, we need to end all this Global Whining!
