Thinking About … the Cordoba Mosque

We want to know what you "think" about.  These short "yes/no/don't care" surveys provide another way for TTP readers to learn, share, and blast off.

Thinking About … the Cordoba Mosque

  • Guy

Can't have visable signs of our religion on our Public Buildings? What is our religion?
The government didn't condone this, just as they don't condone Catholic Churches, Kingdom Halls or Jedi Temples. The government doesn't have any say about the uses of buildings beyond zoning ordinances, and a Mosque fits within the zoning in that area.

  • Nightangel8924

In a yes/no format you guys might want to stick to yes and no questions. The last one today isn't yes or no.

  • Vaped

I usually like The TP, but that statement was ridiculous. How is it insensitive? Is it insensitive to build a church in Waco?

Islam did not attack America, religious zealots (extremists, fanatics, whatever you want to call them) did. America has been attacked by plenty of Christian extremists as well. America has attacked other countries AS religious zealots (Afghanistan, Iraq).

Let those without sin cast the first stone.

  • lovanc

I do not see the analogy. If the hijackers or their backers were responsible for building this structure I think that you would have a very valid point however you are taking a pretty large group of people and associating them all to an event that was planned and executed by a group of extremists. If you applied this as a general rule then there should be no German products in Israel, Japanese products in the US or Korea etc. etc. I think that if you took any group of people, religious, geopolitical etc you are almost always going to find extremists that have probably done something atrocious to another group.

I am not a supporter of religion in general but ostracizing millions of people because of a group of extremists seems to be an overreaction.

All Muslims are not extremists, all Christians aren't annoying. I think what the author of the piece was saying here was build the mosque wherever they want, but given the absolute horror and magnitude of the devastation of 9/11 the pain is still too great, too much and too soon for many.

If 9/11 never happened no one would care where the mosque was built. But those images from that horrible day are seared into our brains. Respect understanding and compassion is a two way street. There are alot of pro Muslim points made on this board and they are made quite well, however, shouldn't Muslims give the same respect back that they are being given by many of you and not build a mosque so near such a heartbreaking place?

Seems like a common sense and respect issue. If you were a bar owner and someone stole your girlfriend you would expect the new happy couple not come in and rub it in your face every happy hour. I think alot of Americans are just asking the same. People need more time to heal.

  • bluemole

If the “happy couple” came back in my bar, they would certainly receive “special” treatment. On the house. heh heh

  • Neraksnikl

Yes, you can have your “religious” freedom, but what idiot in their right mind would allow this slap in the face to America…

  • Neraksnikl

Because those are different religions, doofus..LOL

  • Hydraulicus

sure, like, almost all of them

  • http://randomimages.net jeff

They are all Christian denominations, sir. They just worship differently. Islam is no different – different sects worship differently.

  • JF

First, I didn't say “Ground Zero”, so you need to pay attention. Second, you need to define “several blocks away”.
Granted, there are different sects of Islam that are peaceful, and I would hope that this group is one of them, but is it really worth the risk of pissed off Americans, and possibly more bloodshed? Additionally, how do you know that this isn't a “trophy” for them?
If you want to be herded like the rest of the sheeple, knock yourself out…I prefer to keep my family and my freedom safe, and if that means that someone connected (directly , or indirectly) to a group that has declared a religious jihad on the United States, so be it.
BTW, loved your work in “The Punisher”, but you've apparently turned pu$$y.

  • JF

You are correct, there were Muslims killed in the towers, and there are also Muslims serving in our military. I can also remember a heavyweight boxer converting to Islam to avoid going to war about 40 years ago…so he could use the “conscientious objector” dodge and say that violence was aginst his religion. Also, if memory serves, there was a Muslim officer that went bat$hit crazy (partially because he was being deployed to Iraq), killed 12 people and wounded more @ Ft Hood in November of last year.

Besides, unless you are “Kreskin the Great”, “Carnac the Magnificent”, or one of Dionne Warwicks “Psychic Friends”, how do you know that the people going to this mosque, or any for that matter, are NOT extremist zealots?

  • JF

Actually, we do hold parents responsible for the actions of their children, unless they've reached the age of majority (18) and are considered adults to be held accountable for their own actions. While I do agree that innocent people should not be punished because of their relation to the guilty, I do believe that (as one of my older friends would say of someone of dubious character/lineage) “they bear watchin’.”
Additionally I do not believe in the wholesale characterization of any religious group or race, but I do believe George Santayana was absolutely correct when he said, “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it”.

  • Jonathan E Freeman

    - “but I support their freedom to practice it peacefully. “

Therein lies the rub, Jeff. That one caveat of “peacefully” will remove a ton of people, and not just Muslims.

    Sad, but true…

When all of the terrorists are dead and gone. Got any other dumb questions?

  • A True American

What bull *#@^!!! Religious freedom is one thing, but being unsympathetic and ignorant is a disgrace!! This really pisses me off!

  • Packinman52

irony. does the middle east need the usa to give them a reason to party in the streets? i gotta problem with leveling 2 structures, killing 3000 people, and then, letting them build the face of their religious jihad RIGHT IN THE SHADOW OF THE LOCATION! that would be an irony that america can do without. ….. word.

  • Packinman52

there's plenty of real estate in N.Y. – they can't find something suitable? what they want is insensitive to a fault. thumb yer nose in some other locale. people don't need their face rubbed in it.

  • Sentry01

“Legal” — yes. Good judgment — hell, no !

  • Petunia-@live.com

I want the Twin Towers back. Not some stupid mosque. If THEY feel like they need one I am sure there are enough of them where they are from. So go back to your own country. Thank you and have a nice day

  • Petunia-

my point is its still a kick in the mouth no matter how close the stupid thing is

  • bluemole

Yes, that “stupid” mosque is going to be 111 stories tall. Then those evil Mooselims can then hurl death and destruction onto all the infidels below, while charging 20 bucks to go up and see the view.

Hey Petunia, why don't you go back to your own country and take your ignorance with you. Except for the Native Americans, we is all furriners.

  • bluemole

Where do you live? East Bumfuck? Ever been to NYC? There are mosques next to synagogues next to churches next to bars next to strip clubs next to killer Mongolian and Cuban food.

Do you know where to find sympathy? It's in the dictionary, between shit and syphilis.
